Gathering at the top? Environmental controls of microplastic uptake and biomagnification in freshwater food webs

چکیده

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, with high concentrations being detected now also river corridors and sediments globally. Whilst there has been increasing field evidence of microplastics accumulation guts tissues freshwater marine aquatic species, uptake mechanisms into food webs, physical geological controls on pathway-specific exposures to microplastics, not well understood. This knowledge gap is hampering assessment exposure risks, potential ecotoxicological public health impacts from microplastics. review provides a comprehensive synthesis key research challenges analysing environmental fate transport ecosystems, including identification hydrological, sedimentological particle property microplastic ecosystems. mechanistic analysis outlines dominant pathways for ecosystems identifies potentially critical entry associated contaminants webs as their risk accumulate biomagnify. We identify seven that, if overcome, will permit advancement beyond current conceptual limitations provide process understanding required assess exposure, uptake, hazard, overall systems humans, insights priority impact support management decision making.

Trophic transfer of metals along freshwater food webs: Evidence of cadmium biomagnification in nature

We conducted a study with cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) in the delta of San Francisco Bay, using nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes to identify trophic position and food web structure. Cadmium is progressively enriched among trophic levels in discrete epiphyte-based food webs composed of macrophyte-dwelling invertebrates (the first link being epiphytic algae) and fishes (the first link being go...

Algal blooms reduce the uptake of toxic methylmercury in freshwater food webs.

Mercury accumulation in fish is a global public health concern, because fish are the primary source of toxic methylmercury to humans. Fish from all lakes do not pose the same level of risk to consumers. One of the most intriguing patterns is that potentially dangerous mercury concentrations can be found in fish from clear, oligotrophic lakes whereas fish from greener, eutrophic lakes often carr...

Effects of stocking-up freshwater food webs.

The establishment of exotic game fishes to enhance recreational fisheries through authorized and unauthorized stocking into freshwater systems is a global phenomenon. Stocked fishes are often top predators that either replace native top predators or increase the species richness of top predators. Many direct effects of stocking have been documented, but the ecosystem consequences are seldom qua...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Comparing the Ecological Stoichiometry in Green and Brown Food Webs – A Review and Meta-analysis of Freshwater Food Webs

The framework of ecological stoichiometry was developed primarily within the context of "green" autotroph-based food webs. While stoichiometric principles also apply in "brown" detritus-based systems, these systems have been historically understudied and differ from green ones in several important aspects including carbon (C) quality and the nutrient [nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)] contents o...
